Please submit (in Comments to this page) suggestions of Chicago restaurants serving fine gnocchi.

Anyone (in Chicago or not) may submit recipes and we will make them at home and enter them in the running for the Grand Prize:

Lopapac's Annual Gnocchi Endorsement* (aka LAGE)**
* "Endorsement" not to be confused with "Nourishment"

I hope that we are all aware that gnocchi can only be properly made with the Idaho-style, russet (many would say superior) potato. They cannot be prepared with those other potatoes from that other state.

Blueberries and lobster are also of no use.

I believe that the singular of gnocchi is gnoccho. Or is it gnocco? But, more to the point:

1. Panino is something you might actually order. In fact, chances are that you'll need the singular as much as, if not more than, the plural. The singular of gnocchi, whatever it may be, is probably not that useful at a strictly pratical level.

Of course, the grammar underground probably does not care so much about the strictly practical level.

2. I submit that "chewy squares of fried bread" are not gnocchi, singular or plural. Perhaps they are croutons? Perhaps they are just gross, artery-clogging gimicks used to convince people to come to an italian eatery in an already-saturated market? But one thing's for sure, they're not gnocchi.

I meant the singular. Is that not obvious? No one has answered my question, however. I don't understand! I want answers! I want earnestness! Not snide, sarcastic remarks! Clearly, I came to the wrong place! Eheu!

Even panini has a singular, even if no one but Cafe Bonjour ever uses it.

First of all, gnocchi is, in fact, the plural.

Second of all, I never -- not once -- for the entire year that I was there, had any snooty Italian waiters bring me one noodle.  Neither did any of my friends.  The person who recounted this story is obviously completely insane.

Lastly, the best gnocchi in the city can be found at La Bocca della Verita, at 4618 N. Lincoln, in the Lincoln Square neighborhood.  They're served there in a most delicious gorgonzola sauce -- perfetto!

Gnocchi is already plural, though perhaps the grammar underground will have something to say about this.

It does remind me of a story told to me in first year Italian class about snippy, sarcastic, over-literal Italian waiters who will bring you a single noodle instead of a slice of casserole if you order lasagna instead of lasagne.

I have my doubts about the veracity of this story, frankly, but I do think the grammatical information is probably accurate.

What's the plural of gnocchi? gnoccho?
